Solution
Müller turned to Camozzi to provide an electromechanical system. After a thorough analysis of the application and of the customer’s needs, the solution proposed was based on the use of proportional pneumatics. Essentially, the core of the new system consists of the Open Frame Controller, an extremely flexible valve configured for proportional closed loop control of the pressure or flow. Its easy configuration and commissioning satisfied all the requirements and Müller was very pleased with this solution.
Compared to previous solutions with single valves, each module of the Open Frame Controller can be connected and stacked, covering all functions using a single system. The Open Frame Controller represents a compact and plug & play solution able to control flow, pressure or position in a closed loop within a single device.
Results
The Open Frame Controller, more compact compared to previous pneumatic systems, is used in the compact, automatic Slope Master grinding machine, where it controls both the position of the grinding stone and the pressure applied while the stone is guided along the profile of the ski. At the start of each operation, the Open Frame Controller drives the cylinder that moves the grinding stone and brings it to the start position. As soon as the ski touches the grinding stone, the pressure control kicks in and adjusts the pressure accordingly. Unlike with previous systems, the Open Frame Controller is also able to machine areas using different pressures. This is particularly important when grinding the shovel (tip of the ski) because the grinding stone can be engaged gently to protect the surface.
The Open Frame Controller proved to be a solution with an optimal price-performance ratio compared to any other solution using electromechanical actuators. The final results have enabled Reichmann & Sohn to offer ski workshops with a robust, easy-to-use, automatic grinding machine that is also easy to maintain.
